Phew! It’s been a few days since we waved off our guests who were in Scilly for last weekend’s World Pilot Gig Championships but it was so crazy, it’s taken this long for me to stop panting….
And what an amazing weekend it was, blessed with stunning weather on Saturday, and made even extra special by the handover and blessing of a brand new pilot gig “H4H Valiant”. This very special gig was crafted and built over a number of months at the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall by wounded, injured or sick armed forces personnel as part of the Great Big Cornish Gig Project.
Earlier in April, the project’s Epic Crew rowed it across to the Isles of Scilly to Scilly who then, last Friday, handed it over to Help the Heroes Gig Rowing Team at a special ceremony on Town Beach, watched by hundreds of admiring gig rowers.
We were privileged to host a number of the Help for Heroes group at the Country Guesthouse. There is no doubt that the entire gig community holds the Help for Heroes team in the highest regard on Scilly. The true spirit and camaraderie of these friendly world championships lives on through them.
Congratulations to all the 150 teams that took part, in particular Caradon Ladies and Falmouth Men – World Champions for 2016 – and we look forward to another amazing Pilot Gig Champs weekend next year.
