Sports and Activities
The Isles of Scilly are paradise for those who are looking for unforgettable experiences when they are on holiday.
It would be easy to while away a week or two just enjoying the white-sand beaches and turquoise sea, sitting on the beach reading a good book or relaxing outside one of the excellent cafes with a coffee and the papers. You might perhaps go island hopping on one of the colourful launches that ferries across the lagoon or wade between the islands at low tide before enjoying some local beer in one of the friendly pubs.
But if you want to do something a bit more active there is plenty on offer on land or at sea.
Walking, rambling, bird-watching, bike riding – there are so many activities accessible to all. There is much to see, and so many spots to sit on benches or walls, to take a picnic, a breather, or just to take in the view.
If you want to try something a little different, you can take riding lessons or hack along the beach and see the islands from horseback.
If you like to ring the changes with some organised activities there is a nine hole golf course – not the most challenging course in England, but we challenge you to find one with more stunning views or as relaxed and enjoyable a game!
From our famous gig racing to kayaks for hire, there is nothing a Scillonian likes better than messing about in boats. And you are welcome to join in – lessons in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking are all available. For the experienced sea-farer who just wants to get out on the water the choice of coves, inlets and sheltered bays combined with the rush of the wind between the islands means there is a condition to match your abilities – or just to suit your mood!
Under the sea
Washed by the Gulf Stream, and with England’s mildest climate, the sea around the Scillies is perfect for snorkelling and diving with plenty to see in the clear, shallow waters amongst the reefs and the wrecks that rest on the sea-bed.
The seas abound with many species and fishing from the shore, or on a boat trip, is a favourite activity with visitors and locals like. You might catch a shark or spot a dolphin!
