The Isles of Scilly is fast gaining a reputation for endurance adventure – and our stunning scenery provides the perfect backdrop to get out and enjoy our coastlines, the sea, the trails and more.
Last month, the islands hosted the UK’s first ever qualifier for the world-renowned Otillo Swim Run Championship – and gruelling 37km endurance course that takes in five of the islands. Competitors run across our spectacular islands and swim between them in teams of two in just one day.
The event was dreamt up in Sweden 10 years ago – Otillo means ‘island to island’ in Swedish – and since its inception, the race has become an international triumph not just because of the stunning locations where they take place, but also because of the wonderful support from the local communities and the camaraderie amongst competitors. Scilly was delighted to welcome athletes from as far as Japan, the US and the Nordics. They all had a fantastic time and next year, we look forward to welcoming more teams to a bigger and better event.
Endurance adventure is also celebrated at the Scilly Swim Challenge, which takes place in September. For the third successive year, more than 100 swimmers will set off from St Mary’s and swim their way to St. Martin’s, walk the length of the island before swimming to Tresco, and so on to Bryher, Samson, St. Agnes and back to St. Mary’s by evening.
And only last weekend, there was another endeavour by a swimmer who completed a swim between Scilly and Cornwall…. not for the feint hearted, whilst in September, the Celtic Crossing between Scilly and Cornwall attracts teams of adventures on SUPs and skis!
For us lesser mortals, of course, there are still many other opportunities to get the adrenalin pumping this summer on Scilly. Trail running is increasingly popular, as is coasteering, wild sea-swimming, sailing, SUP-boarding and kayaking to name a few options. All with the most amazing backdrop – of sparkling blue waters, white sandy beaches, and on days like today, cloudless cobalt skies! Why not come and seek some island adventures?
